Why does the world feel so heavy right now?
You feel it in your body before you can name it.
You wake at 3am with what feels like a million thoughts running through your head, already rehearsing a day that hasn't begun. You snap at the kids over breakfast, not because they've done anything wrong, but because the reservoir is empty and there is nothing left to give. You open your inbox with dread, knowing every new message is asking for something you don't have.
The cost shows up in small, ordinary places.
A business owner sits at her desk after the team has gone home, staring at the same spreadsheet because her mind won't settle. Colleagues in a school staff room sit in silence because no one has the energy to start a conversation.
A parent stands alone in the kitchen after everyone else is asleep, wondering why rest still feels out of reach.
Have you noticed any of this in yourself, or in the people around you?
Have you noticed a feeling of unease mentally or physically?
And what will it cost if nothing changes?
Most of what we try helps for a while, but it doesn't touch the real difficulty.
Pushing through works until the body pushes back. Switching off the news creates a welcome quiet, but that quiet fills again the moment you pick up your phone or the pressure builds. A weekend away softens the edges, yet the same tightness is back on Monday morning.
None of these are wrong. They're just not enough on their own, because knowing what you should do is not the same as having the capacity to do it. Your inner state has to come first.
You are one connected system. When your mind is overloaded, decisions slow down. When your emotions are raw, small problems land harder. When your body is neglected or running on overdrive, tension settles into your muscles and your breath. When your energy is depleted, even simple tasks feel heavy. And when life feels unsettled, it's hard to remember why any of it matters. These layers don't work in isolation. Each one affects the others, all the time.
The same is true of a team or a community. Every person brings their own pressures through the door, and together those pressures shape how the whole team thinks, connects and copes.
None of this is your fault. The world is landing hard right now, and it lands hardest on the people already holding things together for everyone else. But something can begin to change once you recognise that your system can be tended rather than driven.
You could start this week with one quiet question. Where do I feel the weight most clearly in myself today? Then see what happens if you stay with that feeling for a full minute without trying to fix it.
If you'd like to begin the noticing together, October's free Yin & Tonic is an invitation to do just that, and to start shifting something within. It's free and online via Zoom on Thursday 29th October, 7pm to 7.30pm UK time. Register here whilst spaces are available. This months theme is 'Finding your steady in a chaotic world'.
No experience needed. No need to be visible. No need to share anything about you.
